What I Am Practicing

A very  dear friend is sending her first born off to boot camp this weekend.  She was looking for some scripture verses that he might pray with and I sent the list below.  It got me thinking that many of us have young adults in our lives who are going off on adventures or back to school at the end of the summer and might like a list like this one.  For that matter we could use these scriptures ourselves to pray on their behalf or in our personal prayer.  I have often admired the way that some Christians are taught and encouraged as children to memorize verse.  I think that in moments of trial these sacred words must come back to you.  I try occasionally to memorize scripture so that I can hold it in my heart but its not second nature to me as I am sure it is with those brought up that way. But regardless, the practice of Lectio Divina, in which the verse is repeated three to four times, pausing in between each repetition to let the Spirit speak lends itself to scripture verses like these.  If you have other verses to add to my friend’s collection for her son, please share.  And please keep him in your prayers over the next six weeks.
Trust:
Ps 56  When I am afraid, I put my trust in you…and have no fear, what can mortal man do to me?
Ps 125  Whoever trusts in Yahweh is like Mount Zion: unshakeable, it stands forever…Yahweh encircles his people, henceforth and for ever
1 Peter 5:6-11…the God of all grace…will confirm, strengthen and support you, His power lasts forever.
Is 26:1-9  Trust in Yahweh forever, for Yahweh is a rock forever
Strength and Weakness:
1 Cor 1:25-31  …but he answered me, “My grace is enough for you; for power is at full strength in weakness.”
Ps 16  Yahweh, you, you alone, hold my lot secure…with him…nothing can shake me.
Jer 23:23-24  Am I a God when near…and not a God when far away?  Do I not fill the heaven and earth?
Security in God
Is 41:8-13  I have chosen you, I have not rejected you , do not be afraid for I am with you ….I shall help you.
Ps 91  Since he clings to me I rescue him, I raise him high, since he acknowledges my name.  He calls to me and I answer him: in distress I am at his side.
Peace and Confidence
Lk 12:22-32  I am telling you not to worry about your life…there is no need to be afraid…for it has pleased your Father to give you the kingdom.
Ps 4  Yahweh listens when I call to him…In peace I lie down and at once fall asleep…it is you…who make me rest secure.
God’s loving concern
Rom 8:28-39…God works with those who love him…and turns everything to their good…neither death not life…nor any created thing…will ever be able to come between us and the love of God…
God’s love
Is 54:9-10  I swear never to be angry with you…my faithful love will never leave you, my comvenant of peace will never totter…
Is 43:2-7  Do not be afraid, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by your name, you are mine…I am…your God…I regard you as precious…and I love you.

  1. Thank you Linda. I like you’re idea about praying these scriptures ourselves.
